1970s - Humble Beginnings

Miller Bros. Construction Inc. began in 1976 with two brothers, Jim Miller, age 23, and Bill Miller, age 20, who shared a vision of building a successful construction business from the ground up. With only $500 each and a ladder, the brothers took their first steps into the construction industry.

In the early days, the company was willing to take on almost any job they could get their hands on. Their work ranged from roofing and painting to the demanding task of hand-digging basements. No job was too small or too difficult. The brothers relied on hard work, determination, and a willingness to take on whatever work was available as they built their reputation one project at a time.

The business initially operated out of Jim and his wife Chelly's home. The family's telephone line served as the company's business contact, making their home the first office of Miller Bros. Construction Inc. Chelly played an important role in those early years as the company's secretary, handling the bills and payroll, preparing contracts and helping keep the business organized.

Jim used the family truck as the company's first work vehicle, while Bill purchased a T-Tag dump truck from the state forestry department. These modest beginnings gave the brothers the equipment they needed to begin taking on larger and more demanding projects.

By 1979, just three years after the company was founded, Miller Bros. Construction Inc. had grown enough to take another important step forward. The brothers purchased an old barn, providing the company with much-needed space for equipment and material storage. This purchase marked an important milestone in the company's growth and established a more permanent place for the business to operate.

What started in 1976 with two brothers, $1,000 combined, a ladder, and a determination to succeed was beginning to develop into a growing construction company. Through hard work, family involvement, and a willingness to take on any job, Jim and Bill laid the foundation for the future of Miller Bros. Construction, Inc.

1980s - Team Expansion

The 1980s marked an important period of growth for the company. It hired its first construction project manager and began building a larger team, bringing on carpenters and laborers who would grow alongside the company. Over the years, many of these employees advanced into roles as project managers, estimators, and office staff, with several remaining with the company for decades and becoming an integral part of its history and success.

During this decade, the company expanded into the light commercial construction market. As the business continued to grow, it obtained the necessary bonding and insurance to pursue larger projects, including government and institutional work, opening the door to new opportunities and markets. This decade also marked another milestone achievement - on February 26, 1985, Miller Bros Construction, Inc. was officially certified as a Pennsylvania Corporation.

Early 1980s

With the company growing beyond the family home, a dedicated office was built in the barn, officially moving the construction business out of the house. In a memorable transition, the home’s existing landline telephone number became the company’s business number.

Late 1980s

By the late 1980s, the company had outgrown its original office space. The barn was converted entirely into office space. 14 additional neighboring acres were purchased, and a separate warehouse and shop was built on the property to support the expanding construction operations.

The 1980s established the foundation for the company’s future—growing its workforce, expanding into new markets, developing employees from within, and transitioning from a small family-based operation into a growing professional construction company.

1990s - Scaling Up

The 1990s brought significant growth and new opportunities for the company. Its bonding capacity increased substantially, allowing the company to pursue and bid on larger-scale commercial and institutional projects.

During this time, the site work division began to grow, expanding the company’s capabilities and allowing it to take on a broader range of construction projects.

The employees who had joined the company as laborers and carpenters during the 1980s continued to develop their careers. Many moved into project management positions, demonstrating the company’s commitment to promoting and developing employees from within.

By the end of the decade, the company had grown to approximately 60 employees, representing a tremendous expansion from its early years and establishing a strong foundation for the continued growth of the business.

The company continued to build on its strong reputation in government, school, and commercial construction, taking on increasingly diverse and complex projects while maintaining the experience and relationships developed over previous decades.

A significant milestone in this period was the 1998–2000 Yuengling Mill Creek Brewery project, a roughly $50 million undertaking that represented a major leap in project size and demonstrated the company’s ability to successfully manage large-scale, technically complex construction.

2000s - Industrial Leadership & Innovation

The 2000s marked another significant chapter in the company’s growth and evolution. During this decade, Miller Bros. purchased the Pennsylvania Anthracite Research Center in Schuylkill Haven, transforming the facility into the company’s permanent headquarters and providing the space needed to support its continued expansion.

During this period, Bill retired, and Jim brought on new partners to help lead the company into its next chapter. Under this new leadership, Miller Bros. continued to expand its operations, growing to approximately 75 employees.

The growth from the previous decade triggered a strong reputation as a leader in industry with an expanding group of respected clients, including Perrier, JELD-WEN, SAPA, Niagara, Michael Foods, Walmart, Lowe’s, Ateeco, Perryman, Structural Metal Fabricators, Huntzinger Farms, North Point Development and many others. These partnerships reflected the company’s growing presence across manufacturing, food and beverage, retail, industrial, and commercial markets, while reinforcing its reputation for quality, reliability, and the ability to deliver challenging projects.

At the same time, Miller Bros.’ sister company, MBC Development, began to establish a growing presence in real estate development. This expansion opened new opportunities beyond traditional construction and positioned the company to take on innovative development projects, including the development of the first LEED Gold Certified Green Building in the United States located in Ebensburg, PA.

2010s - Technical Expertise and Continued Growth

The 2010s marked another important step in Miller Bros.’ evolution. The company established an in-house engineering department, strengthening its technical expertise and solidifying its capabilities as a full-scale Design-Build contractor. Bringing engineering in-house allowed the company to provide a more integrated approach, from design and planning through construction and completion.

During this decade, Miller Bros. continued to grow largely through its reputation. Word-of-mouth referrals and repeat customers became a significant driver of the business, with approximately 80% of the company’s work coming from returning customers. This strong customer loyalty reflected the company’s commitment to quality, reliability, and long-term relationships.

The company also expanded its client base to include national and corporate customers, working with organizations such as Carpenter Technology, Samuel Adams, Dollar General, Mavis, AutoZone, and Sheetz.

With expanded technical capabilities, a growing national client base, and strong customer relationships, the 2010s positioned Miller Bros. as a trusted construction partner capable of handling projects across a wide range of industries and markets.

Late 2010s – A New Generation of Leadership

As the 2010s came to a close, the company entered another important transition in its history. Several existing partners retired, and Jim brought on the current partners—Beau Bruso, Bryan Herb, and Mike Major—to help lead Miller Bros. into its next chapter.

The transition brought new leadership while maintaining the company’s long-standing values, relationships, and commitment to quality. With an experienced team in place, Miller Bros. was positioned to continue building on decades of growth and success while looking toward the future.

2020s - The Design-Build Evolution

The 2020s have marked a new chapter in Miller Bros.’ continued growth and evolution. Building on decades of experience, the company has grown into a versatile Design-Build construction firm, capable of managing large, high-profile projects while continuing to approach smaller renovations and repairs with the same diligence and care.

The company has expanded to approximately 100 employees, including 3 engineers with projects now extending throughout the Eastern Seaboard, from Florida to Massachusetts. This growth reflects Miller Bros.’ ability to serve a diverse range of clients and projects while maintaining the relationships and reputation built over generations.

After more than 50 years without a formal Human Resources department, the company established an HR department to support its growing workforce and the needs of a larger organization.

The decade also brought another significant milestone in the company’s history. Jim retired from the company, marking the end of an era of leadership and the beginning of a new chapter for Miller Bros. Before his retirement, Jim added another partner, Mark Hoover, PE to the company, officially establishing Miller Bros. as a second-generation family company and further strengthening the existing leadership team and partnership for the future.

Today, Miller Bros. continues to build on its history of craftsmanship, innovation, and long-term relationships—fusing the experience of the past with the expertise and vision needed for the future.
